A Face That Still Speaks to Us

In 2027 the world commemorates the 200th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven — a composer whose music continues to shape how we understand emotion, struggle, and creative freedom. Two centuries after his passing, Beethoven remains not only a historical figure, but a living presence in our cultural imagination.

This new portrait by Mariusz Kaldowski was created as a tribute to that enduring legacy. Rather than illustrating Beethoven as a distant monument of the past, the painting seeks to bring him closer to us — as a man of intensity, inner conflict, and extraordinary creative force.

Painting Beyond Likeness

The aim of this portrait was not photographic accuracy, but psychological truth . Beethoven’s face emerges from a field of colour and movement, as if shaped by sound itself. Blues, violets and fiery reds surround the head, suggesting both turbulence and energy — echoes of the emotional extremes found in his music.

The expression is serious, concentrated, almost confrontational. This is not a romanticised genius, but a composer who lived with deafness, isolation and defiance, and who transformed personal suffering into universal language.

This November, Tate Britain will unveil a landmark exhibition bringing together the masters of English landscape — J.M.W. Turner and John Constable . For me, these artists have always been more than names in art history. They are the heart of my own fascination with light, shadow, and the ever-changing drama of the sky.

Why Turner’s Skies Still Matter Today

Turner’s vision of vast horizons and storm-filled skies is something I return to again and again in my studio. His paintings weren’t just landscapes — they were meditations on nature’s power, on fleeting light, and on the emotions stirred by the sea and sky.

Many of my own works carry this “Turner-esque” spirit — dramatic clouds, glowing sunsets, or mist-filled mornings. They are not copies, but reinventions: contemporary explorations of timeless beauty.

A Decade of Painting in London’s Green Heart

Regent’s Park is one of London’s most celebrated green spaces, renowned for its gardens, lakes, and architecture. From 2002 to 2013, it also became the open-air studio of painter Mariusz Kaldowski, who served as Artist in Residence. For eleven years, he captured the spirit of the park in paintings that reflect both its beauty and its atmosphere.

Impressionist Vision of the Park

Mariusz’s paintings from this period are marked by their impressionist style. He transformed fleeting moments of light, reflections on the lakes, and the colors of seasonal change into vibrant canvases. His works do not only show what the eye sees, but also what the park feels like on a spring morning, or a crisp autumn evening.

Connecting Art and People

During his residency, Mariusz exhibited regularly in Regent’s Park. Visitors often stopped to watch him paint, engaging in conversation while witnessing the creative process. Art Against Prejudice: Byzantium & Margarita and the All Saints Ball

Across the world, movements claiming to defend “tradition” often use it as a weapon to divide, suppress, and judge. In the United States, dystopian tendencies are rolling back progress in women’s rights, LGBTQ+ freedoms, and pluralism.

My paintings, Byzantium & Margarita and the All Saints Ball project, are my personal response to these narratives — a small but heartfelt contribution to the struggle against prejudice and control.

Byzantium & Margarita – Facing Authority

In Byzantium & Margarita, I explore the conflict between an individual woman and the authority of religious hierarchy.

She stands covered, except for her courageous face, holding an open golden cage. Behind her, men of the cloth turn towards a glittering altar — blind to her presence. The cage is open: freedom is possible, but fragile.

This painting was created during the 2021 lockdown, yet its message feels painfully relevant today — where old systems of power still dictate who can belong and who must remain outside.

The All Saints Ball – A Vision of Equality

The All Saints Ball project was inspired by Hozier’s Take Me to Church. The song confronts homophobia and religious hypocrisy — themes I expanded to depict ordinary faces, people who might be judged or excluded by rigid systems of belief.

In my vision, they are all saints. Not because of church approval, but because of their humanity. Their dignity is not granted by institutions, but inherent.

This work is a symbolic act of resistance to exclusion, a reminder that heaven — or dignity, or freedom — does not belong to any single tradition, hierarchy, or ideology.

Tradition or Control? A Global Question

In the U.S. and beyond, movements dressed in the language of “faith” and “family values” increasingly push for laws that restrict freedom: from banning books and censoring teachers, to limiting women’s reproductive rights, to rolling back LGBTQ+ protections ( Human Rights Watch , Amnesty International ).

These dystopian tendencies do not preserve tradition; they weaponize it. They divide communities, create scapegoats, and replace empathy with control.

History shows us where such paths can lead — yet art can offer another vision. A vision of equality, compassion, and resistance.

Art as a Voice Against Prejudice

Through painting, I try to hold space for those silenced by judgment. Whether it is a woman confronting authority in Byzantium & Margarita or the diverse, ordinary saints in All Saints Ball, my work is an invitation to see humanity without barriers.

Art cannot change the world on its own, but it can remind us of truths that institutions sometimes forget: that freedom and dignity are not privileges, but birthrights.

Conclusion

In an era of division and renewed intolerance, each creative act can become resistance. My contribution is modest, but deeply personal: to paint against prejudice, to offer images of dignity, and to remind us that we are all closer than these walls of “tradition” suggest.

How Art Can Illuminate the Ecological Crisis: Veni Vidi Vici and Beyond

When I painted Veni Vidi Vici , my focus was ecological awareness. The orangutan, seated on a throne in front of a burning palm forest, symbolises how human consumption drives destruction. He becomes a court jester for our pleasure — a tragic image of displacement and loss.

This painting is not only about orangutan art, but also about the wider story of deforestation and climate change. Through painting, I want to show that ecological art can make visible what we prefer not to see.

Ecological Awareness in Today’s Headlines

The themes in Veni Vidi Vici are echoed in current news. A recent UK government report revealed that everyday products — palm oil, soy, cocoa — continue to cause deforestation overseas . According to WWF-UK, most people in Britain now support stronger laws to keep illegal deforestation out of our supply chains. Orangutans, rainforests and communities in Asia and South America are still paying the price for what we consume.

These reports show why ecological awareness is not just an artistic theme, but a global responsibility.

What Artists Can Do

Artists may not write policy, but art has always been a tool for change. Ecological art — whether a painting, installation or performance — can shift emotions in ways reports cannot. By creating orangutan paintings, rainforest imagery, or works that address climate change, we remind people of what is at stake.

Shades of Music – od płótna do sceny

W 2009 roku artysta Mariusz Kaldowski stworzył tryptyk 'Barwy muzyki, obrazy malowane Chopinem'. Obraz powstał z okazji 200. rocznicy urodzin Chopina w 2010 roku, pełnego koncertów i wydarzeń na całym świecie.

Tryptyk nie był tylko ozdobą galerii – stał się częścią muzyki. Stanowił scenografię koncertów takich pianistów jak Piotr Paleczny , Kevin Kenner czy Paweł Wakarecy , a także towarzyszył występom Orkiestry Kameralnej Polskiego Radia Amadeus .

Every five years, the world turns its ears toward Warsaw for the International Chopin Piano Competition — one of the most prestigious classical music contests in the world. In October 2025, pianists from around the globe will once again bring Chopin’s music to life.

But Chopin doesn’t just inspire pianists. He also inspires… painters!

From Music to Canvas: Shades of Music

Back in 2009, artist Mariusz Kaldowski created a striking triptych, Shades of Music, a painting brushed with Chopin. It was painted to mark Chopin’s 200th birth anniversary in 2010 , a year filled with concerts and celebrations worldwide.

The work wasn’t just displayed on gallery walls — it became part of the music itself. The triptych served as a dramatic stage backdrop for concerts by celebrated pianists such as Piotr Paleczny , Kevin Kenner , and Paweł Wakarecy , and even accompanied performances by the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Polish Radio .

A New Home: Chopin’s Birthplace

Fast-forward to 2025, and the story has a new chapter. The Fryderyk Chopin National Institute has acquired the triptych for display at Chopin’s birthplace and museum in Żelazowa Wola .
